Fred Whitton
'A number of Crosstrax representatives arrived in Coniston, Cumbria, at the weekend (11th May), for the annual Fred Whitton Challenge, a VERY hilly 112 mile circuit of the Lake District. Jason Hemsley and Stefan Macina were competing for the fourth time, whilst Steve Bottomley was a Fred novice, as was Colin Moses and Gareth Patchett (Foster's mate). After a sleepless night in the Achille Ratte hut, myself, Tamara (supporting), and Steve, arrived at the start, on a loveley sunny morning, to find Stef, sporting a new 70's pornstar tasche, ready and eager to go. We saddled up and prepared to go with the fast group at the end, leaving at 8 30am, which included pre race favourites BobJebb (Jebby) and fellow Wheelbase riders, Barrie (go on Barrie), Clarke, Ben Bardsley, and of course Team Crosstrax..The group was probably 30 strong, and the pace was hot, like the temperature. Before long we had climbed Honister and were descending dangerously fast, strung out, down through Patterdale, and onto the climb of Matterdale End. The group was still intact, surprisingly, and Crosstrax were still in the mix. Team Wheelbase had pacers at the front, to launch Jebby later for a new record attempt, and this meant a fast long line along the busy A66, all the way down to Keswick. Stef and I picked up a banana and a bottle here from Tamara, and soldiered on through the scenic Borrowdale valley, awaiting the mighty Honister climb. At the foot of Honister, Jebb's pacers peeled off, their job done, and we jostled for position on the 1 in 4 slopes, passing slower riders, and other traffic. The group disintegrated, and chaos ensued. I lost Steve and Stef's wheels, but was not unduly worried. We battled on over the summit, and were soon plummeting into Buttermere, seeing a number of crash victims on the way. I caught Steve and Stef and rode hard until the first checkpoint and feed station at Buttermere hostel. A quick dib, and grab of food and drink and away, but Steve had just dibbed and gone, and gained an advantage on us. Stef took a natural break also, losing more time, why didn't he go whilst riding? On the climb of Newlands, straight after the feed, we were all separated, but only a few hundred yards apart. But I never saw Steve or Stef again until the end. Steve was still in contention with Ben Bardsley, Barrie Clarke and a few others, while I was isolated, and just passing slower riders. This remained the same for a good while, over Whinlatter, out to the coast almost, Gosforth and Calder Bridge, the next feed and checkpoint. Here I caught Andy Wrigley, who was 3rd last year, and we rode together through Eskdale, approaching the sting in the tail, Hardknott and Wrynose, after 95 miles. I was worried when I saw his 34-39 granny ring, and I only had 39-25 for the 1 in 3 brutal slopes. I was determined to ride all the way however, after resorting to walking, shoeless, like most people, for the last 3 years. My legs nearly snapped, on the near vertical hairpin bends, with the added problems of riders, walkers and cars getting in the way. The descent inbetween the 2 passes offers some respite, but the bad surface and amount of tourist cars, make it tricky, and I had to cut across the grass, a la Lance, a few times. Steve had similar problems, still up there with Barry Clarke, when his tyre blew on a gravelly corner, so he lost a few minutes changing a tube, and any chance of going under 6 hours. Wrynose was a little easier, Andrew Kennedy there to take photos, then it's a long twisty descent through Little Langdale and onto the last little climb before the road back into Coniston. I was very pleased to finish in 6-07, for 8th place overall, Steve rode very well for 6th in 6-04, and Stef finished in 6-19 for 18th place. Gareth and Colin both had good rides, and full results and photos (soon), are on the event website and 'Sportident' website. For the record, Rob Jebb was joint winner, with James Dobbin, the National Hill Climb champion, in a new record of 5-40. With full support next year, which avoids wasting valuable time at the feeds, a sub 6 hour ride is definately possible, for the Crosstrax boys.
Team News
In his first race for Crosstrax Giles Pidcock finished 8th in the Wansbeck CC Road race this Sunday! The race open to E123 riders attracted a field of 80 riders for the 45 mile event. Riders were split into three groups each set off three minutes apart. Giles's group never saw the front of the race as the front group split, it was what was left of this front group that the winner came. Giles grabbed third place for eighth overall in a scramble for the line from what remained of the main bunch that had come together on the last lap. The race was won by ex GB cyclo cross rider, Jough Watson.
Injured
Ed's broken his arm on last night's ride so we are a bit short staffed and this will disrupt the shop for a couple of days.

Firstly Pearce is the first Harrier back on the Harriers v cyclist, then Heather wins the Open 5 at Coniston,
Mark wins the Seniors at Myrtle park at the Yorkshire points and also Joe wins the under 10s
also at Myrtle park.
In fact everyone was on top form at the weekend, from Yoda managing an enthusiastic finish at the cyclist v harriers to the new signing Steve Mangina hitting the top 10 at Myrtle park on Sunday.
Stef Macina it appears is having issues with his name and nobody seems to get it right at an event
Though congratulations to Neil for a good result on Sunday and also to Jason, Gary, Shane, Jimmy and Dale foster for top results at the cyclists v harriers
Crosstrax Wacky Races!!
In the first round of the series, Nacker beat Ed in a close run race. With Nacker on the 24" DMR and Ed on the 26" Pha5e. Nacker got the drop and was first to the Addict R4 corner, pulling a hard left, Nacker laid it down on the back straight going past the team kit, pulling out a lead of about six to eight inches. Ed fought back entering the fast 180 degree lefthander past the helmets, managing to close the gap slightly, but exiting past the till and workshop pits entrance Nacker kept the gap and cruised down the straight. As they began the second lap round the Bio-Racer stand, Nacker did a 90 degree endo to keep a tight line and at this point it became apparent that Ed couldnt do such a manouver and that was the end of the competition. Lets hope Ed can learn to do a 90 degree endo before the second round of this championship
LIGHTWATER LAIKE 2007: Only 2 Crosstrax representatives this year, with Stef Macina WINNING the Expert race, and Jason Hemsley finishing 5th. Stef's time of 1-28 was actually faster than Thwaito's winning time of last year, though it was a bit drier! Great performances though, shame about the comedy prizegiving. Surely Stef deserves a sponsored ride next year Ed?
HAWORTH DUATHLON - Heather Dawe continued her winning streak winning on Sunday, Duathlon Nwe Boy Kevin Ainley impressed with a spirited performance along with old time veteran Rivers.
CALDERDALE MOUNTAIN BIKE MARATHON A number of Crosstrax riders competed in this tough off road race in the Cleck-Hudders-Fax area, on Sunday 14 October. Stef Macina was a surprising winner in a good time of 2-06, followed by Jimmy Farnaby, Jason Hemsley, Kevin Ainley and confirmed roadie Bazza Mordue. Barry was sadly let down by his circa 1980 mountain bike and vowed to stick to what he does best..
Manx end to end on you tube
At the first round of the National Trophy Cyclo Cross Series at Abergavenny, Crosstrax rider Scott Thwaites
continued the good form he showed a few weeks ago when coming second to older brother and shop mechanic,
Mark, in the Isle of Man End to End Challenge
report at http://manxe2e.org/categories/view/6#n_32
Scott broke away early in the Junior race at Abergavenny with Ben Roach of Rugby Velo and the two riders managed to
create a race winning gap by the half way stage. Scott then put in a strong attack to get clear and win by 30 secs.
Meanwhile in the Elite race Mark rode strongly to finish 9th overall and 3rd under 23.

Patchett Gareth was also spotted getting in the miles for his End to End ride.

Sunday saw Scott Thwaites take victory for Crosstrax in the final round of the British Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Series. His older brother (and Crosstrax Mechanic) Mark, also took victory in the U23 race.
Report and photos can be found on the British Cycling website.

LAKE DISTRICT XMAS RIDE
A group of Crosstrax riders and friends have spent a few days in the Lakes over the holidays, with 2 rides based in Ambleside Youth Hostel. Day one was an easy ride in Grisedale, but day 2 was an epic all-dayer over to Troutbeck via Skelghyll, over the Garburn Pass to Kentmere and back via Moor Howe and Troutbeck again. Thanks to Ben for the quality route. A celebratory curry, pool tournament and lots of beer followed in the evening. Looking forward to the next weekender!
Yorkshire Points Cyclocross
Congratulations to Steve O for winning for the second year running the Yorkshire Points cyclocross Junior Title. Winning at Bingley today.
Also well done to Jason and Kim and Mark - who came 4th (not bad for a mechanic). Who all did excellently in a very tough field, with Rob Jebb winning (again).
Also Jason has the best photo of the day award, Boris to supply the evidence later
Harrier's Vs Cyclists
Photos from todays Harrier's Vs Cyclists event can be found at http://crosstrax247.fotopic.net/
A more detailed report will follow soon when Ed has recovered.....Hmm.
In bright but very wet ground conditions, runners this year dominated the event with the first 10 scoring 83 compared to the cyclists 224. Despite packing three in the first four home, cyclists were disadvantaged by the conditions which made the individual performances of Rob Jebb, Ian Holmes and Rob Thackery quite remarkable. For the runners, Ian Fisher (what was he doing on the fells?) was in a class of his own coming home more than three minutes ahead of second runner, Simon Harding. In fact, Ian led for most of the race before being passed by Rob Jebb half way down the descent on the way back to the finish. In the ladies section, the first runner home was Jo Buckley who was a comfortable minute up on her nearest challenger and almost three minutes ahead of the first female cyclist, Heather Dawe. Rob Jebb's mum, Anne, stormed home to win the female vet O/50 title (so that's where he gets it from!).

More Crosstrax on film - The Seat 4X Masters 2006.
If you thought my riding incident was quality, Martin passed on this link - Seat 4X Masters.
Which made me realise, next year we need a group contingent to go to the 2007 seat 4X masters, to make sure Martin gets on the podium which I know he can do.
Crosstrax on film.
Click on the link www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ7XY_I1W6k to see the incident that prevented Ed from taking victory at Lightwater Lake....(He was robbed).
Pictures to follow soon in the all new Crosstrax Gallery!
All Hail Mark Thwaites!
Well it was quite impressive to watch but more impressive having just done my race at Lightwater valley. But Mark Thwaites was so fast at the Lightwater Laike Race that he rode solo all afternoon. Well 89 minutes to do four laps, in which I took 93 minutes to do three laps.
But everyone in the crosstrax colours did really well, particularly jimmy who took off like a rat out of an aquaduct at the start of the experts race and then held on to 4th.
Kev was 11th in the Vets, Jason was 9th in the Seniors (some of which should have been in the experts - Tim Moorhouse you know who you are)
Ben was under the weather but still was up there, Dave, Gareth (unlucky choice of spare tube - my commiserations), and Jenny.
And I enjoyed myself on a really good course, so cant wait until next year.
Lets hope the man flu doesn't affect Rich next year and Graham dosent get lured away by the riches on offer at some pokey duathlon.
Pictures coming soon.

Steve won (again) at the weekend and we are hoping he keeps his title.
3Peaks Cyclo Cross
Report:
For the second year in a row grey misty skies greeted us at the 45th running of the hardest cyclo-cross race in the British Isles – The Three Peaks. 61 kilometres (and about a million feet of ascent) up and over Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent, where taking a bike is actually more of a hindrance than a help. The usual crowd of professional riders lined up, including the now legendary Rob Jebb, and also teams from Scott, Magura, Hope Factory Racing…and of course www.Crosstrax.co.uk ! The weather stayed murky on the tops but warm, and towards the end of the race the skies cleared and we were baked in glorious sunshine.
Heather Dawe, Steve Bottomley, Jason Hemsley, Neil Harrison, Dale Foster, Gareth Patchett and Graham Pearce all took to the start for Crosstrax. With the women and vets set off half an hour before the seniors, Heather and Gareth were up and over Ingleborough by the time our race started. Led through the neutral zone by the commissaire with the usual argy-bargy for position at the front of the pack (the race isn’t won and lost on the road through Horton fellas – there’s three blooming great mountains to go over first!) and then we were off and away up Simon Fell.
It is absolutely awesome to watch Rob Jebb, head and shoulders above even the professional cyclists like Nick Craig (GB Mountain Bike champ), fling his bike over his shoulder like it’s nothing and then jog briskly up and over the skyline. The rest of us mere mortals had to resort to dragging our machines behind us, using the fence to pull ourselves up the gradient, panting and gasping for air in the sweltering, windless heat. Then we went into the clouds and that was it. Could see nothing…where’s the route?...Who’s that over there?...Is that a better line?...Whoa…not ready for that drop off…brakes not working properly…
Coming off Ingleborough is a treat for all thrill-seeking cyclists, and a great way to come off such a long, arduous climb. Then it’s the long road section from Cold Coates to Hill Inn where, if you’re lucky, you can get in a little group of riders and share the work. If unlucky, you are left to burn. Fortunately I found a group.
Whernside is a “get off and carry the bike all the way” kind of a hill. And, as the tallest of the 3 Peaks, really saps the energy so the welcome sight of the solitary official water station is a great relief. Up and into the clouds once again, and then the decision whether you’re feeling confident enough to take on the Yorkshire Stone steps on the bike, or resort to fell-running tactics. This year, as a fresh shower had dampened the surface nicely I opted (chickened out) for the latter and then it’s off to Pen-y-Ghent from Ribblehead into Horton.
The route comes down Pen-y-Ghent the same way as it goes up, and boy those leading fellas really fly down there! The Pen-y-Ghent climb seems to go on forever, and it seems to be just a little too flat to carry the bike but a little too steep to ride. So you end up switching between the two and never really making any progress. However I got there in the end and turned round to face the last, arguably toughest of the 3, descent. You see it’s not whether you fall off – as that is a given in this race – it’s how well you land. Fortunately my “off” was an over-the-handlebars double pike flip with twist which I landed very gracefully (well, flat on my arse) in front of not just a camera…but a TV camera! But I say fortunately because although I lost my pump and inner tube (and some pride) during the manoeuvre, I suffered no injury, and was able to finish my descent and the race. In one piece. Pen-y-Ghent always gets me as by that point I no longer have any sensation in my lower arms and using the brakes has become a laughable farce of an effort to slow down.
Thankfully, none of the Crosstrax team had major mechanicals or any punctures; results are below. Notable performances from Heather Dawe (second lady) and Neil Harrison (25 at his first attempt). I managed to knock 17 minutes off my time from last year and also finish in the prizes:
1 1 Rob Jebb M (1/166) Wheelbase/Ron Hill 03:00:56
17 41 Stephen Bottomley M (16/166) Crosstrax 03:27:33
25 43 Neil Harrison M * (22/166) Crosstrax 03:33:56
29 45 Graham Pearce M (24/166) Crosstrax 03:37:09
60 44 Jason Hemsley M (41/166) Crosstrax 03:56:21
82 393 Heather Dawe F (2/7) Crosstrax (team non-counter) 04:05:22
258 42 Dale Foster M (146/166) Crosstrax 05:00:10
259 218 Gareth Patchett M40 * (89/111) Batley CC/Hargreaves Cycles 05:02:13
Big thanks must go to Matt McCardle for use of the bike, Dad for lugging spare wheels and drinks round and also taking me to and from the race, Andrew Robertshaw for water atop Ingleborough, and Stef Macina for a drink at Ribblehead. And of course, Directeur Sportif Ed Battye. Thanks (kind of) to Emma Payne for an attempt to give me a drink at Cold Coates, although this ended in me losing one bottle and failing to get another one. But it’s the thought that counts…
Here’s to next year!
Crosstrax Annual 3-Peaks Pasta Party at Corks on Saturday 23rd September

You may have noticed a number of new faces at the shop and also voices on the phone. Well we now have three devoted staff working at Crosstrax on different days. We now have Paul Mortimer a top mechanic who comes from an engineering background and is also spinning around on a Kona Stab Supreme Fabien Barel replica. There is Mark Thwaites - who rides a number of Kinesis steeds - obviously as he rides for Kinesis very quickly (don't try keep up with him). And of course Lyndon is still underpinning everything, he is now riding his Yeti, but can be seen on a Cove handjob now and again. Hope that explains everything. Ed will be in attendance particularly on Saturday to lead the Rides up the valley around Calverley, Thackley, Shipley and Esholt.
Otley Cycle Race
Crosstrax dominates the Otley Centre Cycle Race. Well we had the most riders anyway. Which shows that it's the top team to ride for with all the best new talent coming through. Also the old boys did pretty well too, a fantastic result for everyone involved, I know a lot of training had gone into the event with specialist training being done in Italy by Messrs Pearce and Hemsley. All in all a top nights racing.
Oggy wins again
Mr Ogden wins the fourth round of the British 4x so well done him. Also We are hoping that Martin will be doing some coaching for Leeds Council in Bramley so again all looking good for the Ogster.

Police Mountain Bikes
After a year in development West Yorkshire Police have started to take delivery of the new Police Patrol Mountain Bikes from Crosstrax.
The lightweight bikes are effectively a racing MTB that are as strong as most Dirt jumpers with puncture proof tyres, lockout forks, Aluminium frame and Mega Headlights.
So if you're a scally up to no good in Leeds watch out for the Bike cops.
Wednesday night Otley Chevin Fell Race
we are sponsoring the short sharp fell race coming up this Wednesday.
We are putting up a pair of shoes of the runners choice to the first Man and first woman. and possibly a mystery first local prize. Local being defined as within a distance of three miles. So I think that includes Steve Bottomley.

Everyone enjoyed a really good night. Nick Craig has promised to come back again and we thank him for coming along - a top bloke, I think you will agree.
Seat 4X Masters
what a weekend.
Martin made it to the quarter finals, but crashed out chasing Brian Lopez into the final bend.
Prague rules, the track was slow, but had so much going on it was brilliant to watch.
Plus I got to work on Kyle Straits bike and discuss bike set up with Brian Lopez.
Martin did us proud though, and though he was dissapointed with not making it to the final, we think he did brilliantly.
Seat 4X Masters
Well its only been a couple of weeks since Martin joined the team , but we are already on the up, we are on our way to Prague for the Seat 4X Masters, hopefully to get through to the finals, but either way it is going to be brilliant and an experience to remember.
Skills Training
Now Martin is with us, we are looking to pick his brains for some techniques on dirt jumping and general top quality riding. Watch this space for some dates and details.
